Christmas stockings are empty, large sock shaped sacks which are filled during the night on Christmas Eve with presents for young children to open up on Christmas morning. They can be hung above a mantelpiece or simply placed under the Christmas tree. Traditionally, children that have misbehaved that year receive a lump of coal in their stocking.
